Starting a Cake Business: How It happened For Me   by Ken Kramer

Welcome to Kentastic Cakes!
I love decorating cakes! It's a hobby I picked up over the last couple years. I had always made birthday cakes for my kids. But, they were usually done using a character mold and a basic "star" tip. It was nothing anyone else couldn't do.

Then, I got lessons in my home from such celebrity decorators like Duff Goldman, Buddy Valastro and any decorator on Food Network Challenge. I was hooked on all these cake shows and found myself wanting to do more with my cakes. The cakes I have posted here are my completed projects so far.

The next obvious step was to start to make money doing something I love. After all, isn't that what everyone wants to do? But, how? My wife, although supportive of my "hobby", was not so supportive of starting a new business with no real plan in place. I tend to fly by the seat of my pants and hope things work out for the best. She made a deal with me. if I built a clientele and was making cakes on a regular basis, we could then consider a full fledged business I agreed but didn't know how I was going to build a clientele with a full time job that had me traveling all over the place with very short notice.

Then, something amazing happened. Well, amazing depending on your point of view. I GOT LAID OFF!!

The timing couldn't have been worse. But, it also couldn't have been better. Without the job and benefits, it put my family in a serious financial and health insurance strain. However, it also opened up a ton of free time for me to start building my business.

Seeing that I already have a great start to my equipment base, I just ordered business cards, posted on facebook to friends telling them I was now in business and asked for their support. Withing a couple days, I had my first official order. And Kentastic Cakes was born!!

I decided to offer a few free cakes to help get the word out about Kentastic Cakes. I made 2 huge cakes for my synagogue and 1 for a friend's kid's birthday. All gave me great exposure.

Now, I am happy to offer my cakes to you for your next party or special event. Let Kentastic Cakes help bring your event to the next level with one of our custom made cakes.

All cakes are made to order within days of your event. All the fondant that I use is homemade and tastes much better than store bought fondant. So much so that your guests will actually want to eat it, rather than peel it off. The buttercream frosting is also homemade. If you would like a flavor you do not see listed, please ask. I can most likely accommodate you.
