Tulsa Offers Equestrian Shows and More   by Jeremy Smith

If you always wanted a pony as a kid, Tulsa, Oklahoma might be the place to visit. Whether you actually got the pony or not, you'll probably appreciate the numerous livestock and horse shows held throughout the year. Visit the city for equestrian shows, and enjoy the many other things to see and do in Tulsa while you're there. Tulsa's expo center hosts more than 400 events every year. While everyone has their favorites, horse and pony lovers will find a few shows that stand out above other events.

Tulsa Classic
Welcome spring with the Tulsa Classic in April. This show features competitions with the Quarterhorse, Sport Horse, American Paint Pony, Thoroughbred and Warmblood breeds. This is a good time of year to visit a few of the city's 144 parks or 19 public golf courses.

Shetland Pony Congress
The Shetland Pony Congress is held each year in August. The American Shetland pony derives its roots from the early days of settlers and seafarers trading hardy ponies from Europe and the Shetland Islands. The breed of American Shetland ponies has developed popularity since it was developed post 1800. Hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts nearby are filled to capacity as the Shetland Pony Congress draws an annual crowd from near and far to celebrate the breed. To enjoy the sunshine and stay cool, choose hotels with a pool or visit the park at 41st Street Plaza and splash in the water features.

Tulsa State Fair
Tulsa again steals the Oklahoma horse country spotlight with one of the biggest shows of the year. Participants at the Tulsa State Fair will vie for top honors in several classes including Arabian, Drafthorse, American Paint, Pinto, Pony of the Americas, Welsch Pony and Cob. While you're in town for the state fair, take some time to see the sugar art show. Hosted on the fairgrounds and free with state fair admission, this event features elaborate and never-before-seen techniques in confections, wedding cakes and sweet treats.

If you're looking for more than horse and pony shows in Tulsa throughout the year, save some energy for shopping and an appetite for dining. Visit the 1.2-million-square-foot mall while spending quality time with family and friends or if you need a soothing shopping break from the outside world. Don't forget the bustling arts scene. There are several museums, including a children's museum, as well as a performing arts center, two symphonies, a ballet troupe and one of the oldest opera companies in North America.
