A few cake questions?
I'm "in charge" of my grandparents anniversery cake, and I have a few questions. The cake will be 3 layers high, each layer two cakes tall. The base will be a round 9in. cake. Here is a diagram: http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/1113/cakeyq7.png Anyway, here are my questions: 1. I would like to cover each layer in fondant, with buttercream icing holding the fondant on to the cake. Most people will not eat the fondant, so if they peel it off, will there still be enough icing on the cake for when they eat it? 2. Should I have something going through the middle of the cake for support? If so, what? 3. Considering decorating over the fondant with decorating icing. What two colors should they be? I was thinking white fondant and blue decorations, but I can also color the fondant and change the icing. 4. Any other ideas or suggestions? Even if you can only answer one of my questions, It'll be very helpful. Yeah, I think I picked up a bit from ace of cakes.
instead of a support you could try putting the 3 layers on a carboard cut out. So they would sortof be their own then. Just stacked on top of each other. Or if you need a support thru the cake a wooden dowel will work. I am not a cake decorater I just watch a lot of the food channel.
