On a sunny, quiet afternoon in New York City, a centenarian blew one hundred candles on his one hundredth birthday cake. Milton Rogovin, a photographer who covers social documentaries, celebrated his 100th birthday party at Buffalo State College. What is the secret to his longevity?


Contrary to popular belief, longevity is not solely based on health or genetics. Rather, it is one's lifestyle - the day to day activities that one has engaged in for most of his life - is the determining factor in living up to a hundred years old. This has been illustrated by several cultures and societies in the world - small, isolated communities where living up to a hundred is pretty ordinary and common. To date, there has been at least four communities across the globe which has been dubbed "Blue Zones" for having the most number of centenarians in the same area over a long period of time.


One of them is in Sardinia, Italy. Sardinians live on a Mediterranean diet - cheese, whole carbohydrates, nuts and wine. This diet has been patterned by the famous South Beach Diet used by many celebrities. It is known to keep cholesterol levels low and the heart fit and healthy. Similarly, Okinawans of Okinawa, Japan have a diet made of fish, rice, rootcrops and nut - protein rich and whole carbohydrates. Such diet has been successful in ensuring good health and longer lives for these Japanese people.


Japanese people have been known to respect their elderly, and such reverence afforded to them places them a significant position of power and influence in the community and society. After all, it is good to know that you are still useful for your wisdom, because of your age. A good social network always works wonders in increasing happiness and lifespan.


Similarly, the people from the Caucasus mountains in Russia have been known to have fit bodies likened to beasts of burden - literally speaking. They tend to engage in manual labor in the fields tending the soil or harvesting plants; some engage in fishing activities, throwing out nets and catching fish and shrimps, whereas others engage in game, hunting for animals in the wild. Despite such physical strenuous activities all day, they eat little, and sleep much. Such lifestyle is believed to contribute to these Russians' longevity.


Thus, a healthy diet, physical exercise and social support all have contributed in increasing one's lifespan and keeping a healthy mind and body. You just might look forward to ordering natural candles or 100 natural wax candles for your own 100th birthday.
